The NHIN is an initiative of the Department of Health and Human Services and is supported by multiple government agencies and private sector entities. NHIN was launched to provide a secure, nationwide, interoperable health information infrastructure that will connect providers, consumers, and others involved in supporting health and healthcare. This critical part of the national health IT agenda will enable health information to follow the consumer, be available for clinical decision making, and support appropriate use of healthcare information beyond direct patient care in order to improve health.
The NHIN develops capabilities for standards-based, secure data exchange nationwide, improving the coordination of care information among hospitals, laboratories, physicians offices, pharmacies, and other providers. The NHIN functionality seeks to ensure that the appropriate information is available when needed, and that patients’ health information is secure and confidential. Through the NHIN initiative, patients are provided with new capabilities for managing and controlling their personal health records. Perhaps most importantly, the NHIN infrastructure reduced risks from medical errors and supports the delivery of appropriate, evidence-based medical care.
In December 2008, Wellogic became the first technology provider to market with a production release that includes full NHIN functionality, serving as a “network of networks” that connects diverse entities seeking to exchange health information. These include state and regional health information exchanges (HIEs), integrated delivery systems, health plans that provide care, patients and various Federal agencies.
Wellogic is the technology supplier for MedVirginia, the very first NHIN organization to go into live production use with its HIE. This represents the beginning of the first practical use of the NHIN as the Healthcare Internet and Wellogic takes great pride in being the charter Healthcare Internet Service Provider (HISP).
